Addis Ababa (“New Flower” in Amharic) sits at about 2,400 m — one of the world’s highest capital cities. Founded in 1887 by Emperor Menelik II, it is Ethiopia’s political and economic hub and a continental meeting place, home to the African Union Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
